![]() ![]() ![]() The following passages are brief statements about the core gameplay elements of the game. (Of course, if it is not obvious already, they are Tolkien-esque dwarves, albeit in a sci-fi packaging.) There is a strong impression that they are in the game to thematically complement the gameplay of delving underground, mining precious things and slaying monsters. That said, at this time of writing, there is no practical reason for there being Dwarves in the game there are no player characters of other stature. They are the main employees of Deep Rock Galactic, as is evident from the fact that the corporation’s space station that orbits Hoxxes is designed for dwarves. Their voice-overs strongly suggest that there are multiple species of humanoids around, though only dwarves have been confirmed thus far. The Dwarves are the stars of the game, if their very up-front poster-style presentation does not make that clear already. Only Deep Rock Galactic prevailed because it somehow balanced reward versus danger – and it has danger-loving dwarves for employees, of course. According to the backstory, other companies had tried to exploit the planet before, but Hoxxes is a very brutal planet: it has unstable geology, and more importantly, horribly hostile wildlife that band together to eliminate the invaders. What is certain is that there are humanoid civilizations that have mastered space travel (though exactly how is not clear) and there are corporations that are searching space for resources to feed those hungry civilizations with.ĭeep Rock Galactic is one such corporation, and its current – and presumably profitable – endeavour is the exploitation of a planet known as Hoxxes IV, the fourth planet in a star system by the name of Creus. The space sci-fi setting is obvious, but the exact details are not concrete. The backstory of the game at this time of writing is not entirely finalized. It is easy to spot who is the rookie player during the victory screen. getting the materials to build things.ĭeep Rock Galactic offers a different equation, by throwing in waves of killer bugs and a bunch of ornery dwarves in a space sci-fi setting. Furthermore, mining is the means to an end other than an end in itself, e.g. However, these genre-establishing IPs made mining out to be a slow process (despite the fictitious simplification of the act of mining). In video games though, mining is something else instead Minecraft and Dwarf Fortress have made certain of that. In real life, mining is not exactly the most glamourous of jobs it is also not always exciting, yet it is certainly always dangerous. By Gelugon_baat | Review Date: August 28, 2021 ![]()
